"I will stop, I will stop at nothing. / Say the right things when electioneering"
Yeah, so Adrian Nastazi, former Prime Minister of Romania and possible presidential contender in this year's elections was stripped down of his immunity in front of the law. There've been some corruption accusations looming around for more than 3 years now, but the prosecutor's office couldn't go ahead and pursue those accusations because Mr. Nastase was and is a member of the Parliament, and thus entitled to some form of grace that protects him from such petty nuisances as the common law. Until recently, in order to strip any MP of this protection, a 2/3 majority vote was needed; now, it's only 50%+1 of the number of MPs present in the hall. And it seems he himself asked to be stripped down of his protection, so he could finally go into court and "prove his innocence". Well, the electoral campaign is coming soon, of course he said that!
The fact that Romania's elected officials enjoy protection from the law is nothing more but a reminiscent of our totalitarian past, when false accusations were enough to discredit any honourable person. And I feel it goes against the principle of the separation of power that is the basis of all good democracies (i.e. the judicial branch needs a vote from the legislative branch in order to do it's job..).
I wonder if they'll ever fix this damn constitution of ours.
